This is a dessert wine, and an unapologetic one: sweet, concentrated, made exclusively from botrytis-affected berries picked out one by one by hand. Vollenweider bottles a Goldgrube Auslese only in years when noble rot arrives in clean, usable form, so it appears irregularly; this one comes in a half bottle. What keeps it from turning cloying is Mosel acidity — the sugar is genuinely high, but the wine is so lively that it reads far fresher than the numbers suggest, finishing with an almost dry sensation even as it coats the palate. The fruit comes from the Wolfer Goldgrube above Traben-Trarbach, the steep grey-slate amphitheater of old vines that is the heart of this estate. To be plain about it: do not buy this expecting a dry Riesling, or an off-dry one to drink through dinner. It is delicious now with the right dish, and it will keep evolving in the cellar for decades.
