Vienna is the only major capital with a real working vineyard industry inside its city limits, and the Nussberg is its best hill — the rows look straight down on the Danube and the city rooftops. Ried Preussen is a classified Erste Lage on that slope, facing south between 210 and 325 meters on calcareous sandstone that is unusually high in quartz and low in lime, with marine sediment breaking through to the surface; Wieninger farms just over a hectare of the twelve-hectare site. The name traces back to Heinrich Preussel, a crown counsel who controlled the landing port at Nussdorf in the 1280s. Fritz Wieninger is the grower who made Viennese wine serious again, and he farms biodynamically as a member of Austria's respekt-BIODYN group. 2020 was a cool, stop-and-go Austrian vintage with far more rain than the years before it, demanding real selection in the vineyard and giving back wines with lower alcohol and bracing acidity — a classic shape for Riesling, and this one has the frame to keep developing.
