Weingut Willi Schaefer in Graach represents a true Mosel Riesling dynasty—a documented history tracing back to 1181, with family vineyard ownership recorded as early as 1590. Willy Schaefer took over as winemaker in 1971; since 2015, Christoph Schaefer and wife Andrea continue the tradition. The estate holds just three hectares of Riesling vineyards in legendary sites: Graacher Himmelreich, Graacher Domprobst, and Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Christoph earned 'Newcomer of the Year' from Gault Millau in 1997—described as 'absolutely without question one of greatest producers in Germany.' This 2024 Himmelreich Kabinett shows the site's light-sweet character, bright acidity, and the complexity that emerges from traditional winemaking. Ready to drink now or age 8-10 years.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 95
"The 2024 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett still trembles with a little reduction, underneath, a tender apricot aroma fills out into white and yellow peach. That stone-fruited tenderness and intensity is absolutely present on the palate where horizons of peachiness and citrus unfold. At the core, however, is the purest, salty zestiness. The 2024 is a gorgeous, light-footed, intense Riesling with buffered acidity." -Anne Krebiehl MW

Robert Parker

"The 2024 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett is clear, super precise and rather coolish on the elegant and subtle nose that shows ripe peach and just-ripe mango aromas intertwined with notes of herbs and broken and weathered blue and gray slate. Light but fully flavored and textured, this is a crystalline, remarkably refined and charmingly mouth-filling Kabinett from the dramatic steep slope framing the village of Graach and the embedded Domprobst. The finish is clear, fresh, filigreed and lively with minerality due to the fine, slate-inflected phenol grip and its crystalline nature. The 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork." -Stephan Reinhardt

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
