Brunnenhäuschen is the paradox at the heart of Wittmann's Grosses Gewächs range: the site faces due south, yet it ripens very late. Climbing to 240 metres above Westhofen and raked by the west wind, it stays cool under all that sunlight, so the grapes hang for an extraordinarily long season and arrive with ripeness and tension intact. The soil does the rest — clay marl shot through with limestone, plus patches of iron-rich terra rossa that give these Rieslings their creamy, almost savory minerality. The Wittmanns have farmed Westhofen since 1663, farming organically and biodynamically; the wines ferment on native yeasts and mature in large neutral casks, so nothing stands between the site and the glass. 2021 was a year that rewarded that kind of patience: a cool spring pushed bud break back, rainy, warm weather brought viticultural challenges, a rigorous green harvest reduced the crop and picking was done in selective passes, and then a fine autumn handed over all the hang time anyone could want. Dry, and at the house's usual restrained 12.5%, this is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Rheinhessen's great sites.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Terrific with roast chicken and lemon, seared scallops with brown butter, pork schnitzel, smoked trout with horseradish cream, or a plate of Alsatian-style choucroute. The creamy minerality also handles aged Comté and mushroom risotto.

Tasting Profile

Dry and medium-bodied, with aromas of white peach, lime zest, quince and a crushed-stone, faintly smoky edge. The fruit is ripe but tightly wound, and bright acidity runs straight down the middle. The texture is creamy rather than lean, thanks to that limestone and iron-rich soil, and the finish is long, salty and dry. Young and tense now; it will unwind with air and with years.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
