What's Happening in May 2023 at Flatiron NYC!
May is a big month at Flatiron NYC: we'll see the return of Wine School with two exciting new classes taught by two of our own passionate wine educators; we'll welcome some new producers to the shop with tastings at our back bar; we're hosting Isabella Pelizzatti Perego of ArPePe for a Valtellina seminar and Chris Blandy for a Madeira Masterclass; and we'll celebrate Baga, one of our favorite of Portugal's fascinating grapes, with a special walk-around tasting. Join us using the links below, and watch this space as we add new events this spring.
Flatiron Wine School is Back!
Wine School is back for spring! Two of our team's passionate wine educators have prepared themed educational evenings in May and June on some of our favorite topics. You'll explore five amazing wines over 90 minutes of fun and fascinating wine talk. Classes are just $50, and if you’re ready to really dive in and attend all four classes, we’ve got a special discount.
Get ready to buff up your wine knowledge for summer entertaining. Here are the dates for this season:
May 2: Finding the Words for Wine (taught by Julia Burke, DWSET)
What does it mean when a wine is "confident?" What about tasting notes of "pencil shavings" or "pear drop"? If you've settled into some favorite regions and wine styles, but still find yourself lacking the words to explain your tastes and describe the wines in front of you, this class is for you. We'll taste some great wine while discussing the way we talk about wine, the meanings of several common but confusing terms, and how to interpret a tasting note. Tickets HERE.
May 16: Rosé All Day (taught by Annie Edgerton, DWSET, CS, CSW)
Now that the mercury is rising, people are clamoring for rosé! Flatiron's own Annie Edgerton (DWSET, CS, CSW) will take you on a tour of the best of what rosé has to offer, illustrate the range of its stylistic differences, share why it’s the “best of both worlds,” and firmly make the case why rosé is a serious category that deserves your attention and devotion. Tickets HERE.
June 6: Islands, Mountains and Volcanoes: Your New Favorite White Wine Regions (taught by Julia Burke, DWSET)
What does it mean to pursue great winemaking on an active volcano? If you love rocky mineral notes, salty sea air, and mountain freshness in your wines, the white grapes of fascinating locations like Santorini, Tenerife and Sicily are the perfect lens through which to understand terroir. We'll explore five grapes whose flavors and textures are shaped by the land and stewarded by innovation. Tickets HERE.
June 20: Intro to Wines of Austria (taught by Annie Edgerton, DWSET, CS, CSW)
It’s a mystery why Austria isn’t on more people’s radar. It offers a wide array of world-class Riesling, showcases its iconic Grüner Veltliner in styles from cheerful quaffers to serious, age-worthy, gastronomic gems, and presents Blaufränkisch as the heir apparent to Pinot Noir with its insane ability to reflect terroir. Annie will take you on a tour of this gem of a wine country, before the secret is fully out! Tickets HERE.
Each class begins at 6pm. Classes will last approximately 90 minutes and feature five wines. Wines discussed in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited.
Single class admission: $50
Four-class series pass: $200 $180

Back-Bar Tastings in May
On Saturday, May 13 from 2-4pm we welcome Brian O'Donnell of Belle Pente in Oregon's Willamette Valley. These expressive, elegantly styled wines are as souful and honest as Brian himself, and we know you'll love the opportunity to pick his brain on wine philosophy from vineyard to cellar.
Stay Tuned for Additional Dates!
ArPePe Seminar with Isabella Pelizzatti Perego (Extremely Limited Seating)
We are so excited to welcome the delightful Isabella Pelizzatti Perego, of beloved Valtellina producer ArPePe, to the shop at 6pm on Thursday, May 4 for an intimate seminar. Isabella will share her insights as we taste through several of her 2017 wines, with perhaps a few off-menu surprises thrown in. Several of the wines shown at this seminar will be available for preorder at a special rate.
Seating for this event is extremely limited, so RSVP here and please await confirmation.
Madeira Masterclass with Chris Blandy (SOLD OUT)
The charismatic Chris Blandy will be in town May 9 and has generously offered to bring some beautiful Madeiras to the mezzanine for an intimate seminar. The flight will explore Madeira primarily through the lens of Bual, one of my favorite grapes, and Chris will discuss some of his favorite vintages as we taste through a library flight. This event is sold out. Email us for a waitlist spot.
Baga Night
Do you absolutely love the Baga grape? If so, you're going to love this walk-around tasting of our favorite wines made from Baga. Never heard of it? Now's the perfect time to get acquainted, with our Portuguese wine suppliers bringing some wonderful examples of this versatile regional grape.
