What's Happening in September 2023 at Flatiron Wines NYC!

September is here and our calendar is bursting with fun this fall. For starters, back-to-school isn't just for parents and kids: Flatiron Wine School has an expanded series starting in September and continuing into October with not four, not five, but six exciting classes on offer.

We're also looking forward to several great in-store tastings, a masterclass on Bordeaux and several fun in-store experiences including South African winemaker David Sadie, local distillery Neversink, and some delicious cider.

Join us using the links below, and watch this space as we add new events all month.

Oh, and if you haven't already, check out our new Wine School page, where you can learn all about our exciting educational programming!

Flatiron Wine School: September classes are filling up!

This fall, we're going big. From sherry to Pacific Northwest reds to bubbles and Italian luxury wines, we've added classes nearly every week in September and October. We're hosting visiting producers for masterclasses, too. But our classes for this month are already starting to fill up, so keep an eye on our new Wine School page to see them all and snag tickets before they're gone!

See all September and October classes here.

September 11: Canary Islands Deep Dive (taught by Julia Burke, DWSET)
By popular demand, we're going deep with one of the most fascinating wine regions in the world. The Canary Islands boast unique local varieties, impossibly old vines and challenging landscapes, mineral-laced volcanic flavor and structure, and some of the most compelling people in the wine industry. We'll explore five examples from Tenerife, Lanzarote and beyond, and consider the impact we as consumers can have on the rare and fragile environment of these heavily touristed regions.

Taught by Flatiron's own Julia Burke, DWSET, this class will begin at 6:00pm on Monday, September 11 and run for approximately 90 minutes as we taste five wines. Wines discussed in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited. Get tickets now.

September 19: Pacific Northwest Soil into Wine (taught by Julia Burke, DWSET)
It's clear from how fast our Oregon class sold out this summer: New Yorkers have caught on to the magic of the Pacific Northwest. Defined by two epic mountain ranges, vast desert, an ocean, and 18 million years of tectonic chaos, this magical region isn't just postcard-perfect––it's a thriving wine scene that still has room to soar, and it's right here on the continent we call home.

We're going under the hood (Mt. Hood glamor shots aside) to examine the fascinating terroir of Oregon and Washington through the lens of its great wines, like Pinot, Merlot, and Cab Franc, plus some less-expected treats. And because the PNW's tapestry of soil types is so magnificent and unique, we're going to do this through the lens of dirt.

Flatiron's own Julia Burke (DWSET) will explain how the incredibly diverse soils of this region translate into great wines, give you an insider's view of the PNW's exciting and challenging golden age, and share tips for getting the most out of these regions, whether at your table or on vacation. This class will begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, September 19 and run for approximately 90 minutes as we taste five wines. Wines discussed in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited. Get tickets now.

September 26: Bubbles Around the World (taught by Annie Edgerton, DWSET, CS, CSW)

Happily, many wine drinkers have already moved beyond the notion that sparkling wines are only for celebrations. In fact, they’re arguably the most versatile category of all wines! And you don’t need a Champagne budget to enjoy quality bubbles year-round. However, there are so many factors when it comes to sparkling wines, even experienced wine lovers can’t always pinpoint why they like the bubblies they like, or feel confident finding new favorites.

Flatiron team member and Wine Minx® Annie Edgerton, DWSET, CS, is thrilled to take you on a journey of all things fizzy. She’ll walk you through a brief history of this “accidental” creation, outline the different ways sparkling wines are made, cover global styles, delve into the best grape varieties, discuss the influence of dosage, aging potential, importance (or not) of terroir, vintage vs. non-vintage (hint, neither one is necessarily “better,”) and many more factors. Annie truly has a deep love of all things bubbly and is going to share five favorite bottles with you as she illuminates the wonders and joys of secondary fermentation.

This class will begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, September 26 and run for approximately 90 minutes as we taste five wines. Wines discussed in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited. Get tickets now.

Each class begins at 6pm. Classes will last approximately 90 minutes and feature five wines. Wines discussed in class will be available for purchase with a discount available to attendees only. Seating is limited.

Single class admission: $50

Right-Bank Bordeaux Masterclass

When we were offered the chance to host Eloise Maurel for an exclusive seminar on Right-Bank Bordeaux, we didn't hesitate. As Merlot and Cab Franc lovers, we're a little obsessed with the Right Bank, from the region's tremendous everyday values all the way up to the most collectible wines in the world. Eloise lives and breathes these wines. Based in Bordeaux, she's an export manager for Wings Wine, a family négociant, and she is the perfect presenter to lead us through a flight that presents an exciting cross-section of Flatiron's Right Bank program. We hope you can join us on Thursday, September 7 beginning at 6pm for this intimate educational event. Get tickets here.

Details are TBD, but the Neversink folks are pouring some fantastic ciders at the shop on Monday, September 18! Save the date and watch this space.
