This is d'Arenberg's Coppermine Road Cabernet with more than two decades in bottle. Most of us never have the patience to wait that long, so here's a rare chance to see where serious Australian Cabernet ends up. d'Arenberg named the wine after Coppermine Road, which runs alongside d'Arenberg's best Cabernet vineyard. The fruit comes mostly from a near-extinct, unnamed clone of Cabernet Sauvignon. Its berries are tiny and fruit set is poor, so it gives no more than a tonne per acre. The marly limestone under the vines holds back their vigour. That clone also keeps its acidity longer than most, so the grapes can hang on the vine and build flavour without losing freshness, and that kind of backbone is what lets a red go the distance. For anyone curious about how Australian Cabernet ages, this is a lot more fun than reading about it. As with any red this old, stand the bottle upright for a day and decant it gently.

Antonio Galloni

"Full, lightly browning red. Earth, chocolate and cedar aromas beneath dusty, slightly leafy notes of small dark berries and dark olive. Ripe and juicy, with a dark, brooding palate of earthy plum and dark berries over a sinewy spine of firm, somewhat astringent tannins and cedary, chocolatey oak. Needs some cellaring." —Jeremy Oliver

Robert Parker

"One of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons produced in South Australia is d’Arenberg’s Coppermine Road. The colossal 2001 The Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits an opaque purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of lead pencil shavings intermixed with blackberry and cassis fruit, vanilla, Asian spices, and white flowers. Still primary and young, with great intensity as well as tremendous upside potential, it requires 5-6 more years of aging, after which it will last for two decades." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Slow-roasted leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic; standing rib roast with jus; braised short ribs with wild mushrooms; aged cheddar or Comté to finish.

Tasting Profile

Expect the profile of mature Australian Cabernet: the clone's blackcurrant and violet now softened into dried cassis, tobacco, leather and earthy, savoury notes, perhaps with a touch of mint. Typically medium- to full-bodied and dry, with lively acidity still holding it up and fine-grained tannins that have melted into a long, savoury finish. Think of a mature Bordeaux with riper, sunnier fruit.
