A 1995 La Tâche is a chance to taste one of Burgundy's great monopoles after decades in bottle, which is how most people who love this wine hope to drink it. La Tâche is one of two Grand Cru monopoles belonging to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The domaine owns all 6.06 hectares of the vineyard in the Côte de Nuits, so every bottle of La Tâche comes from the house. Among the domaine's wines it is known for opulence: a Pinot Noir that pairs power with grace, where some of its neighbours lean on one or the other. DRC is the most revered producer in Burgundy, making wine from tiny parcels with mythical names, and La Tâche is one of the wines that built that reputation. This bottle isn't for a casual weeknight. Build the evening around it, and give it the time and attention a mature Grand Cru deserves.

"The maturing nose combines moderate floral notes with those of spice, soy and hoisin. There is excellent density, power and minerality to the broad-shouldered flavors culminating in a long and dusty if ever-so-slightly dry finish where a hint of mocha appears. This has the potential to be very long lived and even at 20+ years of age, it's clear that it still has another 5-ish years or so before it reaches its full potential. Multiple notes with consistent results."

"The 1995 La Tâche Grand Cru is an outstanding wine from a decade when I don't think the Domaine was firing on all cylinders. This echoes the magnum tasted last year with those ebullient red cherries and crushed strawberry scents on the nose. As you might expect from the bottle format, it's a little more open and evolved than the magnum. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine-boned tannins, with a dash of white pepper sprinkled over the millefeuille of red fruit. It's delineated and poised towards the finish, so much so that you almost don't notice its structure. Sublime." —Neal Martin

"This wine is mind-boggling and has gathered even more body, power, and density than it displayed from barrel. It is intensely profound, and super-ripe yet harmonious. Its extraordinarily long finish (it tails off with a sweet kirsch kiss) flabbergasted me. I could not help but think of the finishes of two wines I love - Chateau Rayas and Chateau Lafleur. It appears to be holding an enormous amount in reserve, and may ultimately merit higher ratings. It should be held at least ten years, and will easily last through 2020 given proper cellar conditions. Bravo!" —Pierre Rovani

"A sensational La Tâche that's as good as I remember upon release. Shows a suppleness in the tannins without compromising the compact mineral, wet earth and ironlike flavors that express this grand cru's terroir. Balanced, with lots of beautiful fruit, but above all it has pleasure and harmony etched all over it."

More about Domaine de la Romanee-Conti (DRC)

The world's most revered burgundy producer, period. DRC makes wines from tiny vineyard parcels that read like a list of mythical names. You'll never taste them here at regular prices, but when you do, you understand why collectors lose their minds. These are wines that define possibility.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast woodcock or pheasant with its jus; a simple roast squab; wild mushroom risotto finished with shaved black truffle; a well-aged Comté served after the main course.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic La Tâche profile: violets, exotic spice and ripe black fruit in a Pinot Noir that combines real power with grace. The texture is typically velvety, with fine, silky tannins and fresh acidity. With long bottle age this style tends to add savoury notes of forest floor and leather, and the finish is long and layered.
