A 1998 Eiswein from the Dönnhoff family's own monopole, a vineyard that only gives ice wine in the years the weather allows. This bottle has now had more than two decades in the cellar. The Oberhäuser Brücke is tiny: 1.1 hectares of Grand Cru on slate, porphyry, sandstone and loam, lying low on the valley floor right beside the Nahe and across from the old Luitpold Bridge that gives it its name. Cool air settles there at night, and the site is warm and humid, flowering early and ripening late. When winter cooperates, those are the conditions that make it a natural spot for Eiswein. Helmut Dönnhoff's father Hermann planted the vineyard and built it up. Helmut took over in 1966, and this 1998 comes from his years in charge. This is a rare chance to taste a mature example of one of Germany's most unusual sweet-wine sites. Serve chilled, in small pours.

"Scintillating in its intensity, displaying lime, pineapple and apricot on a sleek, delineated frame, this is a structural tour de force, combining the right elements in the right places, with no waste. Beautiful integration and length."

More about Donnhoff

If you love Riesling, you know the name Dönnhoff. If you don't love Riesling-- yet-- Dönnhoff will teach you why the grape inspires such passion.

Dönnhoff is the greatest estate in the Nahe and one of the best in all of Germany. The family has had four generations to dive deep into their terroir and perfect their winemaking. Their top wines are long-lived and collectible.

That terroir is, of course, key. The Nahe has the most varied soils (including, especially, different kinds of volcanic soil) of any German region, as well as a climate that ranges from very cold high-elevation sites to pockets of Mediterranean warmth. This gives Dönnhoff a painter’s palette of flavors and textures from which to craft a perfect wine.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roquefort or Stilton with walnuts; foie gras torchon with quince paste; apricot tarte tatin; Meyer lemon tart; poached pears with crème fraîche.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Riesling Eiswein profile: concentrated apricot, pineapple and citrus peel over honey, with the exotic fruit this riverside site is known for. With long cellaring, these wines typically pick up marmalade, caramel and a hint of petrol. Very sweet but light-bodied, carried by piercing acidity (think Sauternes richness with far more zip), and finishing long and clean.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
