Dry Wachau Riesling at the Smaragd level with real age on it: a 2007 from the Steinriegl vineyard, and a chance to see what these wines become long after release. Steinriegl sits in Weißenkirchen, just east of Joching. It's one of two famous Riesling sites there, and the two make a neat contrast: Achleithen is weathered gneiss, while Steinriegl is calcareous. Smaragd is the Vinea Wachau term for a dry wine with at least 12.5% alcohol, and Pichler is a member who makes his wines under the association's codex. The Pichlers have tended vines here since 1731. Rudolph Pichler III took over in 1997 and built a modern cellar in 2004, so this 2007 was made in the new cellar's early years. It's a bottle for the Riesling lover who wants to know what time does to dry Wachau wine, and it belongs at the dinner table rather than with the aperitifs.

Antonio Galloni

"Medium green-yellow. The nose gives the impression of fully ripe apricot drizzled with honey and spiced with anise and caraway. Powerful and highly concentrated, with opulent fruit flavors of passion fruit and grapefruit leavened by the cool, minerally Steinriegl character. A firm spine of acid contributes further to the piquant, appetizing quality of this superb riesling. Ripe apricot and passion fruit linger impressively on the finish of this young and eminently ageworthy wine. Drink 2010 to 2022." —Peter Moser

Robert Parker

91 points

"The 2007 Riesling Smaragd Steinriegl is vividly peachy, with high-toned penetrating aromatic notes of citrus oil and fruit and herbal distillates that carry onto an oily rich palate, where mint, oregano, lemon, and peach are deployed with enormous refreshment and liveliness. Stony, chalky site-typical notes add to the long, pungent, citric, bitter-sweet, and persistently sappy finish. The textural richness and ripe flavors on display here belie this wine’s merely 13% alcohol, and it should age nicely for at least 5-7 years." —David Schildknecht

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Wiener schnitzel with potato-cucumber salad; roast pork loin with apples; smoked trout with horseradish cream; Alsatian choucroute garnie; pan-seared halibut in beurre blanc.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic dry Wachau Smaragd profile: ripe peach and apricot, citrus and a stony, mineral edge, with a full, concentrated body held up by firm, fresh acidity. With bottle age, these wines typically pick up honeyed, petrol-tinged and dried-fruit notes and still finish dry and long. Think of a richer, more powerful take on dry German Riesling.
