Hubacker is the vineyard that started it all — the first site the Keller family ever owned, worked since 1789, and still the one that yields Klaus-Peter's richest, latest-ripening Grosses Gewachs. The Riesling here descends from cuttings his parents brought down from the Saar fifty years ago, vines that give far less fruit but radiant quality, and the family has never looked back. Limestone is the other half of the equation: it's what separates Keller's wines from the rest of Germany, pushing the aromatics floral rather than peachy the way Mosel slate does. 2023 gave Keller a near-perfect hand — must weights down and acidity two to three grams higher than the year before — and he calls the vintage outstanding. Yields came in at a tiny 31 hectoliters per hectare. If you only drink one German dry Riesling this decade, this is a defensible choice.

More about Weingut Keller

Klaus Peter Keller runs Rheinhessen's greatest address, and his dry Rieslings are so crystalline and deep that Jancis Robinson calls them the Montrachets of Germany. Seventy percent of his vineyard is classified Grosses Gewächs, and every bottling proves the point: this is German wine at its most majestic.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with lemon and thyme, Dungeness crab, scallops with brown butter, pork schnitzel, aged Comte, or sushi and sashimi.

Tasting Profile

Bone-dry and intense, with floral and citrus aromas rather than overt peach. Full-bodied for Riesling but tightly wound, with high, bracing acidity and a chalky, salty mineral streak running through a very long finish. Built to age — give it time or decant.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
