This is a dry Riesling from the vineyard where the Keller story began, and it has more than fifteen years in bottle already behind it. Hubacker was the first site the family ever owned. They have held vines there since 1789, on yellow-veined limestone and marl on a south-facing slope, and it is usually the last of their vineyards to be picked. Limestone is the Keller signature. It makes the aromatics a little more floral and a little less peachy than slate-grown Mosel Riesling. Keller is the Rheinhessen's greatest address. A 2008 from the family's founding vineyard is a chance to taste what dry German Riesling at this level becomes once someone else has done the waiting. It's one for the Riesling lover who is curious about age, not for anyone after the vivid fruit of a new release.

More about Weingut Keller

Klaus Peter Keller runs Rheinhessen's greatest address, and his dry Rieslings are so crystalline and deep that Jancis Robinson calls them the Montrachets of Germany. Seventy percent of his vineyard is classified Grosses Gewächs, and every bottling proves the point: this is German wine at its most majestic.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pan-roasted trout with brown butter and almonds; veal schnitzel with lemon; roast pork loin with apples and sage; Alsatian choucroute garnie; aged Comté or Gruyère.

Tasting Profile

Expect a powerful, dry Riesling shaped by limestone: floral and citrus aromas, with the beeswax, toast and petrol-tinged notes that mature dry Riesling typically gains with bottle age. The palate is typically full yet precise, with firm, mouthwatering acidity, a chalky mineral core and a long, savoury, bone-dry finish. Think the depth of fine white Burgundy, with Riesling's cut.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
