This is a dry Riesling from Hubacker, the first vineyard the Keller family ever owned, and the 2010 arrives with well over a decade in bottle already behind it. Keller is the Rheinhessen's greatest address. The house made its name on dry Rieslings from limestone soils. Hubacker shows why: yellow-veined limestone and marl on a south-facing slope that the family has farmed for ten generations. This is the Trocken bottling rather than the Grosses Gewächs, so it's a slightly quieter way into the site that started it all. Most people drink young Keller long before it gets anywhere near this age, so a mature bottle is the real attraction here. It's for the Riesling drinker who wants to taste what dry German Riesling turns into with time.

More about Weingut Keller

Klaus Peter Keller runs Rheinhessen's greatest address, and his dry Rieslings are so crystalline and deep that Jancis Robinson calls them the Montrachets of Germany. Seventy percent of his vineyard is classified Grosses Gewächs, and every bottling proves the point: this is German wine at its most majestic.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast pork loin with apples, pan-fried trout with brown butter and almonds, Alsatian choucroute garnie, roast chicken with tarragon, or a plate of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Keller take on dry Riesling from limestone: citrus, white peach and stone fruit with a chalky, saline minerality, medium body and bright, firm acidity. With bottle age, wines like this typically pick up notes of beeswax, toast and a hint of petrol, and still finish dry and long. Think of the tension in a fine Chablis, with more aromatic lift.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
