Klaus-Peter Keller may be the most talented dry-Riesling maker in Germany, the man who single-handedly flipped the Rheinhessen from German wine's backwater into Germany's most coveted real estate — the wines are so precise that Jancis Robinson dubbed them "the German Montrachet." Kirchspiel is one of his two largest holdings in Westhofen, with hard limestone running some fifty meters deep beneath the vines. That limestone is the whole point: it's what sets Keller apart from the rest of Germany, pushing the aromatics more floral and less peachy than slate-grown Mosel Riesling. As a Grosses Gewachs — dry grand cru — this is built to age, and with a 2018 you're getting a bottle that has already had years of quiet cellar time others had to wait through. Keller's top bottles are near-impossible to find; a back-vintage GG from his best-known limestone site is not an opportunity that comes around often.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"Lime, lavender, chalk dust and sea breeze on the nose anticipate the pungency, zest, stoniness and mouthwatering salinity that prevail on a polished but firm palate. On top of that, there is an ingratiating as well as refreshing abundance of primary juiciness, as well as added complexity by way of pungent green tea. The finish is startlingly bright, focused and penetrating, adding a savory dimension to the aforementioned herbal, saline and chalky elements for a mouthwatering evocation of raw oyster." —David Schildknecht

Jancis Robinson

"Where the Pettenthal is complex and incredibly intense on the nose, Kirchspiel is all restrained fragrant beauty. Yes, it does have a touch of smoky spice but it is all finesse. A subtle but irresistible temptress of minerality and stony citrus purity. This is a stunning vintage for Kirchspiel: extreme purity, core intensity of the finest fruit, but all so incredibly subtle and unshowy. Such wonderful freshness you might be deceived into thinking it lighter than the Pettenthal but it’s not, it is just quieter, more poised. Endless and so profound."

More about Weingut Keller

Klaus Peter Keller runs Rheinhessen's greatest address, and his dry Rieslings are so crystalline and deep that Jancis Robinson calls them the Montrachets of Germany. Seventy percent of his vineyard is classified Grosses Gewächs, and every bottling proves the point: this is German wine at its most majestic.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast pork loin with apples, Wiener schnitzel, seared scallops, lobster with drawn butter, smoked trout, crispy roast chicken, aged Gouda or Comte.

Tasting Profile

Dry and full of energy, with citrus, orchard fruit and floral notes over a clear chalky, stony streak. Firm, bright acidity, a saline edge, and a long, tensile finish. A mature but still youthful dry Riesling built for the long haul.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
