This is the cuvée that dragged Tannat out of obscurity, and here it is as a 2002. Alain Brumont bought Château Montus in 1980. His first Prestige in 1985 was the first Madiran made from 100% Tannat and aged entirely in new barrels. It beat many of France's top wines at tastings, and top international tasters started calling it the "Petrus of Madiran." Prestige comes from the estate's highest plots: steep, south-facing slopes covered in rounded pebbles over layers of brown and orangey clay, where the warm soil ripens the grapes fully. The house method is serious and hands-on. The Tannat is picked by hand into small crates. Anyone who thinks great structured French red starts and ends in Bordeaux should take this detour to Southwest France, and a back-vintage bottle is a rare chance to do it with the waiting already done.

Tasting Profile

Expect a dark, powerful Madiran in the house style: blackberry and black plum with the balsamic, tar and cocoa notes Tannat often takes on, plus the toasty spice of new-oak ageing. Typically full-bodied and generous, with firm, dense tannins and fresh acidity, finishing long and savoury. Think of a more muscular cousin of Left Bank Bordeaux, built to age.
