This is a good chance to see what Roussillon limestone does to a red over two decades: a mature 2002 Côtes du Roussillon Villages from Clos des Fées. The estate picked its abandoned corner of the Agly valley largely because of a geological map. In Vingrau, the vines grow on steep slopes of limestone scree, with pockets of clay flecked with bits of calcium broken up by frost. The estate's view is that these very alkaline soils make dense, structured reds built to age, and a 2002 lets you check that for yourself. It's also a late place to farm. Some slopes face north and get only a few hours of winter sun, and harvest never starts before 15 October. The Clos des Fées vineyard itself sits in wild garrigue scrubland inside dry-stone walls, built by generations of earlier growers who cleared the stones by hand or with a horse. Most people don't think of Roussillon when they think of reds to cellar, and that's exactly why a back-vintage bottle like this is so much fun to open.
