The steepest and highest of Chandon de Briailles' Corton holdings, and the clos Louis XI took over from the Dukes of Burgundy in 1477: 0.45 hectares of calcareous, slightly sandy marl, most of it planted in 1961. Farming is organic (certified since 1998) and biodynamic, with the soil worked by Comtois draft horses, and the Pinot Noir is fermented as whole clusters in open wooden cone vats without pumping, then aged 15 to 18 months in the estate's Cistercian cellars, roughly 85% in used barrels. Where their Bressandes is broad and iron-tinged, Clos du Roi is the more mineral and floral of the two, and it has been approachable from early on without giving up any of its long life. 2005 brought concentration and acidity together in the Cote de Beaune, and at twenty-one years this is drinking beautifully with decades still in reserve. Decant, and give it room in the glass.

"A spicy, ripe, and expressive nose features distinct floral notes amongst the red and blue berry fruit but the big and robust flavors are understated and backward as well as intense, structured and mouth coating on the explosive and powerful finish. This is built to last seemingly forever though the fifteen years I suggest here is a minimum." —Allen Meadows

More about Chandon de Briailles

Chandon de Briailles is the domaine that makes the case for Savigny-lès-Beaune: draft horses in the vines, plenty of whole clusters in the vats, and red Burgundy that comes out perfumed, fresh and built to age. It's one of our very favorite domaines in Burgundy.

The de Nicolay family has owned the estate since 1834. The name links the family to the Chandons of Moët & Chandon, though the two businesses are entirely separate. In the early 1980s Nadine de Nicolay stopped chemical treatments in the vineyards, and today her children run the domaine: Claude in the cellar, François in the vineyards and the business. The vines were certified organic in 1998, converted to biodynamics from 2005 and Demeter-certified in 2011, and the estate has sold its last tractor.

About 14 hectares are spread across Savigny, Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton, including premier crus such as Île des Vergelesses and Les Lavières and the Corton grand crus Bressandes, Clos du Roi and Maréchaudes. Fermentations run on native yeasts in open vats, new oak stays around 20% even for the grand crus, sulfur is kept very low, and some cuvées are bottled with none at all. The wines can be shy in youth, then open into something silky, transparent and long-lived.
