You don’t see much Swiss wine out in the wild—but when you do, it’s usually from Bündner Herrschaft, the tiny corner of Graubünden that turns out Pinot with mountain soul. And Mohr-Niggli’s Stellibofel bottling? It’s one of the coolest.

This is single-vineyard Pinot Noir, grown on steep slopes in the Alps, and made with a light touch that lets the site do the talking. The 2019 is all about that Chambolle-meets-altitude vibe: red cherry, dried rose, alpine herbs, a little forest-floor depth, and a sleek, mineral spine that could only come from limestone and cold mountain air.

It’s the kind of wine that feels super refined but also a little wild around the edges—in a good way. There’s no heavy oak, no flashy fruit—just elegant, savory Pinot with a sense of place and zero pretense.

If you’re into Jura reds, Burgundy with bounce, or just want to drink something you definitely won’t find at the average wine bar, this is it. Serve it slightly cool, pair with mushroom anything, and be prepared to explain where Graubünden is.

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
