Albariño made the way it ought to be and rarely is: organically farmed pergola-trained old vines, fermented in steel and stirred on its lees for months, with only a touch of sulfur added. Alberto Nanclares moved to Galicia for the beaches and found himself falling for the vines instead; he later took on Silvia Prieto as a partner, and the two of them have spent years showing that this grape can carry real texture and terroir rather than just seafood-friendly zip. Dandelion draws on parcels across the Val do Salnés at Castrelo, Vilariño and Padrenda, planted on sandy, decomposed-granite soils, with vines mostly between twenty-five and forty-five years old. Where much of Rías Baixas works fast and industrially, Nanclares y Prieto never chemically manipulate the fruit or the wine. Pour it into a proper glass and give it ten minutes out of the fridge.

More about Nanclares Y Prieto

Alberto Nanclares was an economist who moved to Castrelo, near Cambados in Rías Baixas, in 1992 with no plan to make wine. The pergola-trained Albariño around his house changed that, and by 1997 his garage had become a tiny winery. Silvia Prieto, a Pontevedra winemaker, joined in 2015. Together they farm organically, ferment with native yeasts, use little sulfur and skip fining and filtration. The results are salty, crystalline, Atlantic Albariño, and Dandelion is the perfect place to start.
