This is the top of the Joguet range, from a great Chinon vintage. The domaine classes the 2022 as a vin de grande garde, a powerful red built for long ageing. The clos is a two-hectare parcel of 70- to 80-year-old Cabernet Franc on very calcareous clay, right next to the winery. The estate's address is simply La Dioterie, in Sazilly. Because the vineyard faces north-east, it's the last parcel picked each year. Charles Joguet, the painter and sculptor who took over the family vines in 1957, stopped selling grapes to négociants and bottled each terroir on its own, applying Burgundy's thinking to Cabernet Franc. Kevin Fontaine now runs the vineyards and cellars, farming organically. In 2022 Chinon had a dry summer, a wet September and no spring frost, and the domaine describes the wines as concentrated, with mineral freshness and exceptional ageing potential. After 14 to 18 months in French oak and another 10 in vat, this is a bottle that rewards patience. The domaine says Dioterie needs five or six years to show its complexity and rarely peaks before ten. Compared with what single-vineyard Burgundy this ambitious costs, it's a very smart bottle to lay down.

More about Charles Joguet

Joguet is another jewel in the Kermit Lynch portfolio, the domaine is situated just between the Loire and Vienne Rivers in the AOC of Chinon. Vinified separately, according to parcel since the 1950's, the estate is now run by winemaker Kevin Fontaine and wines are divided into 2 categories: those meant for early consumption, and those meant to age.

Flatiron's Take

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tournedos Rossini or a rib of beef. In a great vintage like 2022, try venison or a slow-cooked wild boar stew.

Tasting Profile

Expect the serious side of Chinon Cabernet Franc: dark cherry, blackcurrant and violet with graphite and a leafy, savoury edge, framed by subtle French oak. Old vines on chalky clay typically give concentration, firm tannins and bright acidity, finishing dry and mineral. Think of a cooler, fresher Left Bank Bordeaux, built for long ageing.
