Nicola Gatta, Quattrocento Extra Brut R19, NV
is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.
Nicola Gatta farms biodynamically in Gussago, a high-altitude, limestone-rich corner just outside the Franciacorta DOCG. That “outsider” status lets him do things his way—no shortcuts, no added sugar, long lees aging, and zero unnecessary interventions. Quattrocento is a perfect intro to his style: patient, precise, and quietly intense.
The R19 refers to the 2019 base vintage. The wine is mostly Chardonnay with a bit of Pinot Noir, aged a minimum of 48 months on the lees before disgorgement, and bottled Extra Brut (under 4g/L of residual sugar). It’s sharp and mineral, but not severe—lees aging gives it texture and a savory edge that balances the chalky cut.
Unlike most sparkling wines at this price, Quattrocento isn’t built for easygoing aperitif duty. It’s more structured, more detailed, and more expressive of place. A serious alternative to Champagne, especially for those looking to branch out into grower-style bottles from beyond the big-name regions.
