This is Saumur-Champigny Cabernet Franc grown in the same small patch as Clos Rougeard, Thierry Germain and Antoine Sanzay. It's made without oak or fuss and is meant for drinking, not for waiting on. Caroline Meurée and Hervé Malinge bought the domaine in late 2018. She came from Château Lamothe in Bordeaux, and he had worked in St-Émilion, Burgundy and Roussillon. They now farm 33 plots around the village of Varrains organically, with certification underway. The name means "green sand," after the greenish sand in many of the appellation's best vineyards, and this 2024 comes from 28-year-old vines on clay-limestone, green sand and tuffeau at 60 to 80 metres. In the cellar they split the hand-harvested fruit: half got a quick five-day maceration and half a longer 15-day one. All of it fermented on native yeasts and spent seven months in stainless steel. Saumur-Champigny has quietly become one of France's great red-wine values, and this is a very good everyday way into it.

More about Sables Verts

Domaine des Sables Verts was founded in 2019 by the husband and wife team of Caroline Meurée and Hervé Maligne. The couple cut their teeth in Bordeaux, and Hervé spent time in the Roussillon before arriving in Saumur. They inherited an exceptional mosaic of old vines across Saumur, including a prime parcel in Les Poyeux planted in 1950, right next door to vines belonging to Clos Rougeard and another Saumur legend and longtime Flatiron favorite, Thierry Germain.

Sables Verts, or “green sands,” refers to the iron-rich marine deposits that define many of the appellation’s best vineyards. In Les Poyeux, these green sands mix with clay-limestone over tuffeau bedrock, yielding Cabernet Franc of remarkable freshness and finesse, with the structure to age beautifully.

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pork rillettes with cornichons and crusty bread, roast chicken with herbs, grilled pork chops, seared duck breast, a mushroom and leek tart, or a cheese board with aged Loire goat cheese.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic unoaked Saumur-Champigny profile: crunchy raspberry and red cherry, a fresh green-herb and graphite edge, and a chalky minerality. Typically light-bodied, with bright acidity and soft, fine tannins, it finishes clean and juicy. Think of a fresher, more savoury cousin of Beaujolais, best served slightly cool.

Loire Valley Wines

The Loire Valley is France’s greatest source of value for anyone looking for elegant, terroir-driven wines. Our collection celebrates the region’s great diversity, with the mineral-driven whites of Muscadet and Sancerre, the beautiful Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs from villages like Vouvray and Chinon, and natural wines from everywhere in the region. Sometimes wonderfully fresh and gulpable, sometimes serious and age-worthy, the prices are always very reasonable.
