A field blend from three distinctive non-sandy plots, located within the geographical area of the Colares wine-growing region – the towns of Colares, São João das Lampas and São Martinho. It's fine-boned and herbaceous, with bright peppery notes, lots of salinity, and an elegant earthiness. A bit like Cabernet Franc grown in pink quartz (but next to the salty Atlantic Ocean).

Colares, on the Atlantic coast near Sintra, is one of Europe's strangest vineyard areas: ungrafted vines planted deep in sand, which phylloxera could never reach. Adega Viúva Gomes in Almoçageme is one of its standard bearers, run today by father and son José and Diogo Baeta. They work the local specialties, Ramisco for reds and Malvasia de Colares for whites, with organic practices on sandy and limestone soils. These are genuinely rare Portuguese wines, salty, taut and built to age.
