Leo Alzinger, a top Wachau producer, holds parcels in two great Danube Valley vineyards: Loibenberg and Steinertal. The grapes are fermented spontaneously in stainless steel and aged in steel with a small amount of neutral Austrian oak—a minimalist approach that lets the vineyard speak.

The Steinertal is known for very stony, shallow Gneiss soils with some loess on lower terraces—a site of distinctive minerality. The 2024 Ried Steinertal Smaragd Riesling shows this minerality clearly. Smaragd is the highest dry level in Wachau classification. The wine was scored 98 points by one critic, indicating exceptional quality from the 2024 vintage. At two years old, the wine is young but drinking beautifully. The stony soils create a Riesling of remarkable mineral precision—this is a wine for those seeking limestone-driven, mineral-forward expression. Spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel preserves clarity and focus.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Riesling Steinertal Smaragd comes from poor, higher-lying gneiss parcels predestined for Riesling. Very subtle scents of crushed citrus leaf and lime emerge with air. The palate is all citrus, linearity, brightness, purity and precision. Slender yet exquisite, it stands in body and demeanor as the opposite of what many would call an "icon" wine, but it is iconic nonetheless." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

"Succulent, steadfast, quietly vibrant, with crisp green-plum fruit and a feeling of coolness that™s like the vapour coming off the land on a warming morning. This is very pretty, with delicate violet notes and great balance."

More about Alzinger

Leo Alzinger Sr. established this Wachau icon in 1983 and has since defined what great Austrian Riesling can be. With holdings in two of the Danube's greatest sites—Loibenberg and Steinertal—he and his son Leo Jr. craft wines of crystalline purity and restraint. Fermented at low temperature in acacia casks and aged on fine lees, their single-vineyard Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings are wildly delicious with serious structure. These are wines that prove minimalism in the cellar is actually maximalism on the palate.

Tasting Profile

Mineral-driven with dark minerality hints and delicate fruitiness. Medium-bodied, complex, with excellent acidity and finesse. The stony soils create a Riesling of remarkable mineral precision—the wine dominated by mineral and structural character rather than fruit sweetness.
