Solaia is the Antinori bottling that proved Cabernet could rule in Tuscany, and the 2008 is now a mature Super Tuscan ready to drink. It comes from a single twenty-hectare vineyard at the Tenuta Tignanello estate in Chianti Classico country, planted on hard limestone-rich albarese rock with a southwest exposure at 350 to 400 meters. The 2008 is roughly 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc, aged in new French oak. This is a serious, structured red that has had well over a decade to soften; decant it and give it air. A benchmark of what Italy can do with Bordeaux grapes.

"I have never loved the 2008 Solaia, and that impression is reinforced on this night. If anything, the 2008 suffers in this setting, where the differences between vintages is stark. A mid-weight Solaia, the 2008 looks like it will drink best over the near and medium-term." —Antonio Galloni

"Lush, ripe and polished to a gleam, this red exhibits black cherry, plum and sweet spice flavors on a powerful frame. Balanced, with a chewy, spice- and violet-filled finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc."

"Definitely on a top 10 list of Italian icons, Solaia affirms the massive potential of Italian winemaking, from vineyard to cantina to cellar and beyond. Superrich and polished, but never over the top, this gorgeous super Tuscan shows deep layers of chocolate, black cherry, rum cake and spice. The secret lies in its balance: Everything is in place, from intensity and complexity to persistency."

More about Antinori

Antinori traces its story back to 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Guild of Winemakers in Florence. Today, the 26th generation (led by Marquis Piero and his three daughters) oversees 20 million bottles annually across 150 labels from estates in Montalcino, Bolgheri, and Chianti Classico. They literally engineered the Super-Tuscan revolution with Tignanello in the '70s. This is a family that doesn't just make wine—it shapes the entire conversation around what Italian wine can be.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised short ribs, roast lamb, aged pecorino, or porcini risotto.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied and deep, with blackcurrant, dark plum and blackberry leading into cedar, tobacco, scorched earth and crushed stone. Tannins have mellowed with age into something supple, and the finish is long and savory.
