António Madeira fled Portugal as a child but returned to reclaim family vineyards in the Dão, bringing French education and Portuguese roots to bear. His Branco is a precise, site-driven white assembled from roughly 20 native varieties—Bical, Fernão Pires, Arinto, Cerceal—grown on granite soils in the foothills of Serra da Estrela. After malolactic fermentation and aging in stainless steel, the 2022 vintage displays ripe apricot, peach, and citrus interwoven with delicate florals and pronounced minerality that echoes wet granite. The texture is elegant yet full-bodied, with a saline quality that marks wines from serious Portuguese terroir.

"The entry-level white 2022 Branco was produced with 80% younger vines (separate varieties) and 20% old vines (mixed varieties) from a very dry year when they had difficult fermentations and had to resort to using some skins from a skin maceration to make the fermentations finish. The wines have a little more volatility. It still has 12.5% alcohol, a pale yellow color and is quite clear, with a very expressive nose of herbs, spices and some cereals and a very tasty palate with pungent flavors and mellow acidity. The whites are never filtered or fined in order to avoid losing the salinity." —Luis Gutiérrez

More about Antonio Madeira

António Madeira was born in Paris in 1978 after his father fled Salazar in 1970. He worked as an engineer in France, then decided in 2010 to return to his Portuguese roots in Serra da Estrela (Dão), near Santa Marinha. He's assembled 8 hectares across 20 plots in 6 villages, working with real intimacy and intention. Natural winemaking, organic farming, wines that taste like mountain air and patience. This is a reclamation story told in liquid form.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Polaner Selections has to say about this wine:

VarietalsWhite BlendBiodynamicPracticingVineyardAll the grapes come from small local farmers in the Serra da Estrela that work without the use of herbicides. The vineyards range from very old to some young vinesOrientationSerra da EstrelaSoilGraniteViticulturepurchased fruit from small local farmers working without herbicides. Antonio's team does the harvest so that a first sort is done in the vineyard and so that small boxes of 15 kg are used.VinificationThe grapes are harvested in the early AM to be cool. They are destemmed and pressed The skins and juice macerate in the press with CO2 blocking the empty space for about 3-4 hours to extract Nitrogen in the must which is important for yeast health in fermentation. The juice is then racked to a stainless steel tank to decant for 24 hours and clarify. It is then racked off the deposit into a combination of wood and stainless steel to ferment. Most is in steel around 70%.Aging13 months of aging. The barrels used here are sometimes his original 225L used barrels. He is slowly replacing everything with larger wood but still has some small barrels left. The wine finishes Malo.
