Arnot-Roberts helped redefine what California Cabernet could taste like, and this bottle from a ridgetop vineyard near the top of Monte Bello Road shows why they earned a near-cult following. Fellom Ranch sits at roughly 2,200 feet in the Santa Cruz Mountains, on a complex mosaic of Franciscan chert, sandy loam, clay, and serpentine that lends real structure and site character. Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts work in a restrained, elegant register, favoring balance and lower alcohol over power, a nod to the great California reds made before the era of high extraction. At fifteen years on, the 2010 is drinking in a mature window, its tannins resolved and its aromatics turned savory and complex. Decant it and give it a real meal.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Blue and black fruit, asphalt, melted road tar, mint, cloves and violets saturate the palate in the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Fellom Ranch. A rich, voluptuous wine, the 2010 impresses for its sensual personality, vivid detail and fabulous overall balance. Only in this second vintage, this Cabernet Sauvignon from a parcel at the top of Montebello Road near Ridge is flat-out beautiful. The 2010 is totally unique and distinctive. I get the sense the Fellom Ranch could be a markedly better wine. World-class, in fact. Right now, it is merely outstanding." —Antonio Galloni

More about Arnot-Roberts

Childhood friends Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts made their first wine together in 2001 and helped kick off what came to be called the New California wine. Working from Healdsburg, they seek out cool, maritime-influenced vineyards across the state and make about two dozen small lots a year, often from uncommon varieties, with low intervention and alcohol in the 11 to 13 percent range. Restrained, elegant wines that nod to pre-Parker California.

Perfect Pairings

Grilled or roasted lamb, dry-aged steak, venison, or duck. The savory maturity also loves mushroom dishes and firm, aged cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Aromas of dark cassis and blue fruit turning toward tar, mint, dried herbs, and violets with age. Medium to full-bodied and detailed, with resolved tannins, fresh acidity, and a balanced, lingering finish.
