Extreme-site Cabernet from 2,200 feet on a harsh Santa Cruz ridgetop—old cane-pruned vines from the 1980s struggling in sandy serpentine soils to produce thick skins and concentrated flavors. Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Roberts seek out "uber-distinctive and often extreme vineyard sites," fermenting whole clusters with natural yeast and limited new oak. The result: structured, mineral-driven Cabernet with black cherry, herbs, and distinctive serpentine earthiness at modest 13-14% alcohol.

"The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Fellom Ranch comes from vines planted at 2,200 feet in elevation in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Grapes were harvested on September 7, and the wine was matured for 22 months in 10% new French oak. The nose is bursting with aromas of blackcurrant, blueberries, camphor, violet and botanical undertones. The full-bodied palate offers concentrated, nuanced flavors matched by muscular tannins. Childhood friends Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts made their first wine together in 2001 and helped kick off what came to be called the New California wine. Working from Healdsburg, they seek out cool, maritime-influenced vineyards across the state and make about two dozen small lots a year, often from uncommon varieties, with low intervention and alcohol in the 11 to 13 percent range. Restrained, elegant wines that nod to pre-Parker California.
