"The Copain set the stage for our last two Syrahs, both from the Sonoma Coast, a part of California I find immensely intriguing. Here, too, these wines had no problem being served after some of the richer wines. If anything, the freshness and brightness of the flavors left an impression of vitality and energy that carried through the rest of the day. Much the same can be said for the 2010 Syrah Griffin's Lair from Arnot-Roberts, a wine that had put on quite a bit of weight since I last tasted it. More about Arnot-Roberts

Childhood friends Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts made their first wine together in 2001 and helped kick off what came to be called the New California wine. Working from Healdsburg, they seek out cool, maritime-influenced vineyards across the state and make about two dozen small lots a year, often from uncommon varieties, with low intervention and alcohol in the 11 to 13 percent range. Restrained, elegant wines that nod to pre-Parker California.
