The Brea Vigna Ca' Mia represents the heart of Brovia's expression—a vineyard planted in 1955 and vinified separately since 1995 that has become the flagship of Elena Brovia's winemaking vision. Located within the Brovia-owned Brea MGA, this southeast-facing plot sits on ideal exposures that yield concentrated Nebbiolo of remarkable depth. Brovia's winemaking is traditional: spontaneous fermentation in open-top cement vessels, extended maceration, and aging in large neutral French and Slavonian casks. The 2021 opens with violets, bark, resin, tar and elderberry aromatics, building into a medium- to full-bodied palate with firm tannins, layered red fruit, and a regal lift of elegance. Needs time—drink from 2027 onward.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca' Mia is a rich, potent wine. Sage, menthol, gravel, licorice, incense and dried flowers run through a core of dark Serralunga fruit. This sepia-toned, brooding Barolo needs time, but it possesses notable textural depth and power. Time in the glass brings out the wine's breadth and overall presence. The 2021 offers a captivating mix of finesse and intensity, the duality that is at the essence of what Barolo is all about." -Antonio Galloni

"The Brovia 2021 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca' Mia is another beauty from a stellar vintage. This expression is slightly more floral initially, in a playful way, but fruit is from Serralunga d'Alba, so you get the power and those characteristic notes of iron and candied orange peel as well. It has it all, including a bolder and bigger texture, not in the sense of volume but in the sense of length. The wine remains extremely polished and fine overall. Fruit comes from one hectare on clay limestone soils at 300 to 370 meters above sea level. Production is 5,000 bottles." -Monica Larner

"Mid crimson. Enticing, minerally red fruit on the nose, with complex herb and spice notes. Seems extrovert at first, but curls up. Compact palate with a core of cool cranberry fruit filled out with sandy, fine tannins. Ends almost a little mouth-watering and with real substance and length but without being heavy."

"The 2021 Vigna Ca' Mia is captivating. It comes from the heart of the Brea MGA, which is solely owned by the Brovia family. The ideally exposed south- to southeast-facing plot was planted in 1955 and has been vinified separately since 1995. It expresses itself eloquently with savoury iron, iodine and hibiscus tea. The palate is judiciously concentrated with red currant and fleshier red cherry tossed in dark dusty earth. Vibrant acidity makes this seem effortlessly weighted, and powdery tannins bring immersive, surround sound depth. A long finish extends the pleasure even further."

"The extraordinary 2021 Vigna Ca' Mia shows it Serralunga heritage and captures the qualities of this outstanding vintage. It has beguiling aromas of wild rose, rosemary, camphor and cedar while the vibrant, structured palate captivates with ripe Morello cherry, raspberry, licorice, blood orange and cake spice. A backbone of firm, fine-grained tannins provides support while fresh acidity keeps lifted right through its lingering, salty finish. What a breathtaking wine." -Kerin O'Keefe

What importer Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine...

We often call this cru “Il Ruffiano” for its rustic, raffish nature. This is a boisterous, friendly Barolo from the heart of Serralunga d’Alba with all that zone’s lush fruit and generous body. Here the wine thrusts us into the dense ambience of the forest: the dark berry-like fruit, the moss and underbrush, the truffles and mushrooms of the Langhe. It’s all there with bravado and confidence. Warm, rich, dense … one of our best friends at the table. This is a one-hectare vineyard planted to Nebbiolo in 1955. The exposure is southeast and the altitude is 350 meters. Like the other “cru” Barolo, the “Ca’Mia” experiences a cuvaison of at least 3 weeks before being racked into large French “botti” for two years or more of aging. Annual production is on the order of 3,500 bottles of which 1,200 (plus 60 magnums) are destined for distribution in the USA.
