Castiglione Falletto's Villero vineyard has a storied reputation for balancing sheer power with elegance, and Brovia's 2021 proves why. This is Nebbiolo at its most structured: wild rose and cedar aromas open into a palate of succulent red cherry, strawberry, and white pepper, underpinned by fine-grained tannins that promise decades of evolution. Brovia's traditional approach—long maceration and aging in large neutral oak casks—lets the vineyard's south-facing clay-limestone soils sing without oak imprint. The wine achieves that rare combination of depth and precision that Villero is known for.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Barolo Villero is a tight, reticent wine, as Barolos from this site often are. Spice box, dried flowers, mint and plum begin to emerge with a bit of time in the glass. This firm, classically austere Barolo feels rather shut down following its bottling. The Villero is always the hardest wine at Brovia to taste young. Even so, it oozes classicism. All readers need is a measure of patience." -Antonio Galloni

"The Brovia 2021 Barolo Villero has that powdery or chalky element that I love so much from this site. It's like crushed chalkboard, and it frames other more fragrant aromas of sambuca, aniseed, blueberry and lilac. This wine is beautifully complex, and it keeps going in the glass, unveiling new layers all the time. The same thing can be said of the long mouthfeel. Villero is 1.2 hectares at 230 to 350 meters above sea level with marl soils (a mix of silt and clay). The wine matures in 40-hectoliter French and Slavonian oak casks, and 5,000 bottles were created." -Monica Larner

"The gorgeous 2021 Villero from Brovia reels you in with its enticing fragrance of wild rose, cedar, pine forest and red berry. Elegantly structured and utterly delicious, the poised, precise palate features succulent red cherry, strawberry, star anise and white pepper before a salty finish. Firm, polished tannins provide seamless support while bright acidity keeps it wonderfully balanced and lends racy tension. This is a wine I would love to have in my cellar and follow its evolution over the years." -Kerin O'Keefe

What importer Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine...

Some may argue the case but, personally, if we had to pick one of these ā€œcruā€ Barolo as the ā€œking of kingsā€, our vote would go the ā€œVilleroā€. The package is complete: strong yet elegant, powerful but dignified, above all pure and balanced. No matter the vintage, this special site in Castiglione Falletto yields a consistently marvelous wine that will age with consummate grace. Dark and brooding in its youth, it matures into a regal wine of exceptional depth. For us it is the quintessential Barolo. This 1.5 hectare vineyard faces southwest at an altitude of 340 meters. The vines were planted in 1961. The ā€œVilleroā€ is aged in large French oak ā€œbottiā€ for at least two years after a cuvaison of three weeks or more. Approximately 5500 bottles are produced annually; 1,200 bottles plus 60 magnums are bottled exclusively for us for the US market.
