Like its sibling Piè Rupestris, this wine comes from ungrafted Nebbiolo vines—among the rarest in existence. "Piè Franco" (literally "free foot") denotes vines growing on their own roots, a viticultural rarity since phylloxera's 19th-century devastation. Cappellano's sandy Serralunga soils allowed these vines to survive. The estate's traditional approach—long maceration, large oak, patience—produces wines of haunting complexity. The 2011 vintage was warm and early, producing approachable wines that have developed beautifully. Now with over a decade of age, expect profound aromatics of tar, roses, and wild herbs.
