More about Boundary Breaks

Boundary Breaks is a Finger Lakes estate that went all in on Riesling, and it shows: most of the Rieslings are named for the German clones they come from, and they run the full range from bone dry to ice wine.

The spark was a German Spätlese. Owner Bruce Murray, who left a 30-year career in publishing for wine, was so taken with one that he set out to grow Riesling in his native New York. In 2007 he bought a 120-acre farm on the east side of Seneca Lake that had been in the same family since 1850, and began planting in 2009. The name refers to the ancient glacial channels, or "breaks," that mark the property's northern and southern boundaries.

The vines grow on Cazenovia silt loam, with the deep waters of Seneca Lake moderating the cool climate, and the vineyard is certified under the New York Sustainable Winegrowing program. Three Geisenheim Riesling clones, 110, 239 and 198, give the wines their names: Dry Riesling No. 239 and Riesling Reserve No. 198 are the benchmarks, alongside the medium-dry Ovid Line North. Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Franc and an ice wine round out the range. Expect taut acidity, stone fruit and slate, and real Riesling precision.
