A magnum of Cuvée Tardive, the Fleurie Clos de la Roilette makes for the cellar, from 2015. Alain Coudert is blunt about the name: "tardive" (late) has nothing to do with the harvest. It just means you should drink it later. The house makes it from its oldest vines, planted so close together that no tractor fits between the rows, on heavy clay with a lot of manganese and relatively little granite. The Couderts credit that soil and the age of the vines for the richness in their wine. The Clos is an east-facing slope right on the Moulin-à-Vent border. When the Fleurie appellation was created in the 1920s, the owner at the time was so furious about losing the Moulin-à-Vent name that he put a photo of his racehorse, Roilette, on the label, left Fleurie off it entirely and refused to sell in France. Fernand Coudert bought the overgrown estate in 1967 and replanted it, his son Alain has made the wine since 1984, and Alain's son Alexis has now joined them. Serious cru Beaujolais in a big bottle makes a strong case for Gamay at a dinner party.

"Bright magenta. Sexy, highly perfumed scents of red fruit liqueur, candied flowers and five-spice powder, along with a smoky mineral topnote. Sappy, deeply concentrated raspberry and rose pastille flavors show impressive energy and are complicated by a suggestion of Asian spices that gains power in the glass. At once powerful and lithe, finishing very long, with impressive focus and silky, harmonious tannins." —Josh Raynolds

More about Clos de la Roilette (Coudert)

Alain Coudert inherited a poorly maintained Fleurie vineyard in 1967 and spent five decades proving it could rival Moulin-à-Vent. His vines border Moulin-à-Vent and taste like it—richer, more structured, with clay and mineral manganese rather than pure granite. The Cuvée Tardive is built for aging, but even the regular Fleurie ages beautifully. A generational project completed and handed down.

Tasting Profile

Expect a deeper, more structured take on Fleurie than the usual perfumed style: dark cherry, plum and violet with an earthy, mineral edge from old vines on clay. It's medium-bodied, with fresh acidity and firm, fine tannins, and finishes long and savoury. Think of it as closer to a Moulin-à-Vent than a light, juicy Beaujolais, and built to reward time in bottle.
