Most Champagne rose is assembled from red wine sourced wherever the house can get it; this one comes entirely from a single village. Everything is grown at Ormes, on the western edge of the Montagne de Reims, where the Bereche family farms vines around forty years old: Pinot Noir leads, Chardonnay fills in, and a small portion of still red Pinot from the same village sets the color. It ferments naturally in older wood with no malolactic fermentation, then spends three years or more on its lees sealed under cork and agrafe clip rather than a crown cap, a slower and more expensive way to age Champagne that Bereche insists on. The name is the Roman one for the countryside around Reims. 2022 was a sunny, generous year in Champagne, saved from drought by well-timed August rain, and the fruit shows it. In magnum it will develop more slowly and more gracefully, which is reason enough to buy the big bottle.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2022 Extra-Brut Rosé Campania Remensis, tasted from a pre-disgorgement sample, is gorgeous. Aromatic, pliant and engaging, the Campania Remensis is all charm. Cranberry, watermelon, chalk, mint and white pepper are some of the nuances that inform this ethereal Rosé. Harvest took place on September 6 and 10, pretty much the norm these days in Champagne." —Antonio Galloni

"Disgorged in January 2026, the 2022 Rosé Campania Remensis reveals aromas of red cherry, raspberry and blood orange mingled with notes of red apple. Medium- to full-bodied, it is ample and textural, underpinned by ripe yet racy acidity and built around a rich core of fruit that reflects the sunny, dry vintage, enlivened by chalky extract and a pillowy mousse, concluding with a long, saline finish. It is a blend of 20% Chardonnay and 80% Pinot Noir, of which 5% was vinified as red wine." —Kristaps Karklins

More about Bereche et Fils

The great grower Champagnes that excite Champagne lovers these days tend to fall into a certain category, with low dosage, low sulphur, and a decidedly edgy vibe. We love them. But one grower has managed to gain worldwide fame—not to mention a cult-like obsession here in the U.S.—without going in that direction: Bérêche & Fils.

On paper, at least, everything about Bérêche is classical. This starts with history, as this is a domaine that was founded just before the U.S. Civil War. It continues with land. They don't farm some obscure corner of Champagne, but in its historic heart, with plots scattered around the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne.

Traditional and classical, perhaps, and yet something sets it apart: sheer excellence. Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche's intense focus on high quality farming and precise work in the cellar is exactly the sort of hard work that was too often missing from the pre-grower Grand Marques. And it results in wines that people—no matter how geeky their Champagne tastes—just love.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
