Fixin fruit in a Bourgogne bottle — that's the whole pitch, and it's a good one. Les Prielles is a single one-hectare parcel on the flat land at the northeastern edge of Fixin, where vines planted in 1980 on deep limestone and marl get declassified into Amelie Berthaut's humblest red. She treats it like the rest of the range: ambient yeasts, up to half whole clusters, fermentation in concrete with a gentle regime of pump-overs, then a year in used barrels with no new oak anywhere near it. Berthaut came home in 2013 and built the domaine by uniting her father's Berthaut vines with part of her mother's Gerbet holdings, and Fixin has been her cause ever since — she'd like the world to take the appellation seriously again. This is the cheapest way to see what she means, and the house line for the style says it well: wines built to age that can still be drunk young.

More about Berthaut-Gerbet

Amélie Berthaut returned to her native Fixin at the top of the Côte de Nuits in 2013 and brought together her mother's and father's family vineyards under one label. The domaine now comprises 13 hectares across the top villages of the Côte de Nuits, including a first-rate premier cru in Vosne-Romanée. Amélie makes wines that are delicate and complex, farming organically and bottling with the kind of precision that speaks of genuine understanding. This is Burgundy kept in the family and made even better for it.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with mushrooms, steak frites, coq au vin, lentils with sausage, or a plate of Comte and cured ham. Good with a slight chill alongside a mushroom tart.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied and bright, with red cherry and raspberry fruit, a little dried herb and spice from the whole clusters, and an earthy, stony edge underneath. Lively acidity, fine and modest tannins, no oak flavor to speak of. Finishes clean and savory.
