What is this wine?
Cantine del Notaio is a respected estate in Basilicata, southern Italy, founded in 1998 by Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti. The winery specializes in Aglianico del Vulture, the powerful red grown on the volcanic slopes of Monte Vulture. L’Atto is their entry-level Aglianico, sourced from younger vines and crafted to be approachable in its youth, while still expressing the grape’s depth and structure.
Why get this wine?
Aglianico is often called the “Barolo of the South” for its intensity and aging potential, but it can be forbidding in its youth. L’Atto offers a more fruit-forward, early-drinking version from one of Basilicata’s top producers. It delivers volcanic character and real complexity at an excellent price, making it a smart way to discover Aglianico.
What does this wine taste like?
Medium to full-bodied, with flavors of ripe black cherry, plum, and blackberry framed by notes of licorice, spice, and smoky mineral. Firm but polished tannins give structure, while bright acidity keeps it lively.
When should you drink this wine?
Drink now through 2027 for its juicy fruit and youthful energy. Excellent with hearty southern Italian fare—think braised meats, sausages, aged cheeses, or pasta with rich tomato sauces.
