The Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche Grand Cru MCMLV 2021 is an extraordinary wine that exemplifies the essence of one of Burgundy’s most prestigious Grand Cru vineyards. The “MCMLV” designation honors the remarkable heritage of this cuvée, crafted from vines planted in 1955. Clos de la Roche, situated in Morey-Saint-Denis, is revered for producing wines that seamlessly balance power and elegance, and Hubert Lignier’s biodynamic viticulture and artisanal winemaking ensure this wine achieves its full potential. The 2021 vintage, defined by cooler conditions and lower yields, resulted in wines of exceptional vibrancy, precision, and finesse.

This wine reveals a captivating bouquet of blackberries, black cherries, and dark plums, complemented by floral aromas of violets and rose petals. Layers of earthy truffle, crushed stones, and exotic spices such as clove and star anise provide depth and intrigue. On the palate, the wine is both structured and refined, with velvety tannins, a vibrant core of acidity, and a mineral-driven complexity that reflects the limestone-rich soils of Clos de la Roche. The finish is long and resonant, leaving an impression of purity and timeless elegance.

Presented in a 1.5L magnum, this wine is perfectly suited for long-term aging, allowing its layers of complexity to evolve gracefully over the next 20–30 years. It pairs beautifully with dishes such as roasted duck, venison with a red wine reduction, or truffle-studded pasta. The Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche Grand Cru MCMLV 2021 is a true collector’s gem, embodying the legacy of old-vine Burgundy and the exceptional craftsmanship of one of the region’s most respected producers. A masterpiece for those seeking the pinnacle of Morey-Saint-Denis terroir.

What importer Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine...

For the first time in 2017, Laurent Lignier produced a separate cuvée of Clos de la Roche in honor of his grandfather Henri. The Clos de la Roche “MCMLV” comes entirely from Henri’s first planting in 1955: 27 rows of Pinot Noir in the Monts Luisants climat, which he used to propagate the rest of his holdings during the 1960s. This original parcel is highly susceptible to millerandage, which results in small berries of immense concentration, and Laurent harnessed the full power and intensity of such fruit in this stupendous bottling—of which he produced a mere two barrels. A wine such as this embodies Burgundy’s most profound essence: the continuous spirit and presence of a family whose members’ very hands have worked these same vines, this same parcel, since the vines were planted. How could Henri Lignier, when he was breaking earth in 1955, have ever imagined the course his home region would take over the ensuing decades, or the global acclaim that would be heaped on his son’s and his grandsons’ wines? Yet, despite the incredible changes those ensuing 65 years have witnessed, a Lignier has steadfastly worked each vine among these 27 rows of Clos de la Roche, vintage after vintage, gradually building its reputation as one of red Burgundy’s pinnacles. “MCMLV” is not just a great wine, then; it is an emblem of all that makes Burgundy special.
