Château Gruaud Larose traces its origins to 1725, when Abbot Gruaud began planting vines in Saint-Julien. The estate earned Second Grand Cru Classé status in the 1855 Classification and has been owned by the Merlaut family since 1997, who introduced sustainable and organic methods. Sarget is the second wine, named for a family who owned part of the estate before selling to the Cordiers in 1917. The 2020 vintage saw Saint-Julien emerge as one of the left bank's most successful appellations—the slightly higher clay content helped vines manage drought stress better than pure gravel sites. This blend (48% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc) ages 14 months with 15% new oak. Light tannins, nice freshness, crisp fruit—an accessible introduction to Gruaud Larose's pursuit of elegance and balance.

"The 2020 Sarget de Gruaud Larose initially has an attractive bouquet with cassis and touches of violet. It's slightly herbal in style, and this becomes more pronounced with aeration, fraying at the seams. The palate is medium-bodied with decent concentration on the entry and fine backbone, if just missing a little focus on the finish. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting." —Neal Martin

More about Chateau Gruaud-Larose

Sarget de Gruaud Larose is the second wine of Château Gruaud Larose, one of the largest estates in Saint-Julien, and it carries a slice of the château's history in its name. The Sarget family co-owned Gruaud Larose for much of the nineteenth century, and Baron Sarget built the château itself in 1875, before his heirs sold their share to the Cordier family in 1917.

Gruaud Larose goes back to 1725 and the Gruaud family; a son-in-law, Joseph-Sébastien de La Rose, later added his name. The estate was divided for decades before the Cordiers reunited it, and since 1997 it has belonged to the Merlaut family. The vineyard lies mostly in one large block on the highest ground of the Saint-Julien plateau, on gravel with more clay than most of the commune. Conversion to organic farming began in 2019, and the estate was certified from the 2022 vintage.

The second wine comes from the same vineyard and cellar as the grand vin, with parcel-by-parcel fermentation in concrete and wooden vats, but it is aged for a shorter time, around fourteen months, mostly in used barrels, so it is softer and readier sooner. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot shifts with the vintage. Expect classic Saint-Julien, with dark fruit, cedar and a firm but approachable frame.
