A Barolo the Mascarellos don't make every year. In lesser vintages the Santo Stefano di Perno fruit goes into a blend with the family's other crus, and 2001 was one of the years it was bottled on its own. It's also the only Mascarello Barolo grown outside Castiglione Falletto. The vines are in Monforte d'Alba, the village where the vine-tender Giuseppe Mascarello founded the business in 1881, so this bottle is something of a homecoming. The family's Perno vineyard sits fairly high on clay and limestone, and of all their crus it gives the biggest, most old-style Barolo: Villero is the most feminine and Monprivato falls somewhere between the two. The 2001 pairs Monforte's depth and power with real elegance. When it was released, the call was that it needed a long time in bottle and would peak around 2021, so this is exactly the moment to open one. It's still made the old way: no new French oak, no roto-fermenters, just the Slavonian casks the family bought in the 1950s. Serve at about 18°C, the producer's own advice.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2001 Barolo Santo Stefano di Perno is sweet, layered and totally beautiful. The exotic aromatics - which can be pronounced when the wine is young - have begun to meld into the fruit. There is plenty of richness and depth in the glass, but the overall impression is one of softness and delicateness." —Antonio Galloni

More about Giuseppe Mascarello

Giuseppe Mascarello's origins trace to 1881 in Monforte d'Alba, now representing over 130 years of Barolo tradition. Mauro Mascarello and his son Giuseppe avoid new French oak entirely, aging in decades-old Slavonian oak botti purchased in the 1950s. These are classically-made Barolos—Monprivato is the crown jewel—that taste like the region's soul distilled into a bottle.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), slow-cooked wild boar ragù over pappardelle, rosemary-roasted leg of lamb, or a plate of aged Castelmagno and Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Tasting Profile

Full-bodied, classically built Barolo with plenty of ripe, chewy tannins and a strong sense of its soil. The depth and power typical of Monforte come with real elegance and clarity. After two decades in bottle, it's now in its mature drinking window.
