The cult traditionalist blend, made before the rules split the vineyards apart: until the 2010 vintage Beppe Rinaldi bottled Brunate together with Le Coste as one wine, a house tradition that ended only because labeling law changed, not because anyone at the estate thought the blend was the lesser wine. Rinaldi was the last of the "Last of the Mohicans" — with Bartolo Mascarello and Teobaldo Cappellano — the traditionalists who refused to follow the modern turn, and in a region obsessed with single-vineyard bottlings he insisted on blending sites to capture the soul of the appellation rather than the plot. The house method is as plain as it gets: natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini, no temperature control, no filtration. He sold mostly to private individuals rather than the trade, which is a large part of why these bottles are so hard to find; he died in 2018, and daughters Marta and Carlotta run the estate now. This is a genuine back-vintage bottle of the blend that built the legend, so stand it upright well ahead of time, decant off the sediment and pour gently.

Antonio Galloni

96 points

"The 2007 Barolo Brunate-Le Coste is a regal, aristocratic Barolo. Firm tannins keep some of the extroverted qualities of the vintage in check. This shows marvelous inner minerality and coolness, with deep layers of fruit, menthol, licorice and tar that fill out the wine’s broad shouldered frame. The Brunte-Le Coste shuts down pretty quickly in the glass, suggesting it may be headed for a period of dormancy. Today, it is flat-out stunning." —Antonio Galloni

Jancis Robinson

17 points

"Barolo. Concentrated ruby still quite youthful. Immediate strawberry and raspberry nose. Same intense sweet red fruit on the palate. Gentle mouthfeel, but needs to shed it juvenile brashness. Very perfumed finish with stalky tannin." —Walter Speller

Wine Spectator

96 points

"A ripe, sweet cherry- and raspberry-flavored red, accented by white pepper, cinnamon and floral notes. This is generous and vibrant, with a pleasant hint of astringency on the finish. Very elegant, in a traditional style, where finesse meets intensity. Best from 2015 through 2032." —Bruce Sanderson

Wine Enthusiast

90 points

"Thanks to its thicker soils and excellent exposition, the Brunate cru usually offers dense, meatier expressions of Barolo. This beautiful wine proves the point with hearty aromas of blackberry, prune and cherry. The long finish is characterized by concentration and dimension."

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.
