A Barolo blend that can't be made anymore, from a cellar whose bottles hardly ever reach the trade. In a region obsessed with single vineyards, Beppe Rinaldi blended sites to capture the soul of the appellation rather than one plot. Up to the 2010 vintage he bottled Brunate and Le Coste together as one wine, and that stopped only because the labeling rules changed, not because anyone at the estate thought less of the blend. Brunate, in La Morra, is the cru that gives elegant but structured Nebbiolo with a distinctive perfume. Under EU law the estate now releases a Brunate (85% Brunate, the rest Le Coste) and a Tre Tine that takes the remaining Le Coste along with San Lorenzo and Ravera, so this 2005 is a look at the house's original idea. The winemaking is about as old-school as Barolo gets: natural yeasts in open-top wooden vats, 25 days with no temperature control, 42 months in Slavonian oak and bottled unfiltered. Beppe was the last of the "Last of the Mohicans," with Bartolo Mascarello and Teobaldo Cappellano, and he sold mostly to private individuals, which is why any real quantity is nearly impossible to find. He died in 2018, his daughters Marta and Carlotta run the estate now, and a bottle this old and unfiltered should stand upright well ahead of time and be decanted gently off its sediment.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2005 Barolo Brunate-Le Coste is a bit more open than the Barolo Cannubi S. Lorenzo-Ravera, but that openness manifests itself in aromatics that are starting to show signs of development. The tannins remain forbidding, which leads me to believe the 2005 will never be fully in balance. More importantly, there is a mustiness in the aromatics that is either a less than perfect cork or barrel. I have never found the 2005 to be an especially engaging wine by Rinaldi standards. My most recent tasting has done nothing to change that." —Antonio Galloni

Decanter

98 points

"Lovely broad, spicy fruit aromas with notes of seasoned leather and clove. Massive sweet, rich palate and fine tannins. Ethereal aromas to finish."

Wine Enthusiast

89 points

"Here is a rich and expressive Barolo (with fruit sourced from the celebrated Brunate Le Coste cru) that focuses squarely on fruit and floral aromas. There are tiny background shadings of clove and exotic spice that bring up the rear and the wine's mouthfeel is polished and tight."

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and shaved white truffle; brasato al Barolo with polenta; roast guinea fowl with porcini; a wedge of aged Castelmagno or Raschera.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic traditional Barolo: violets and dried flowers, tar, sour cherry and dried herbs, with the perfumed lift Brunate is known for. Typically medium-bodied but firmly structured, with high acidity and grippy tannins that long ageing in large Slavonian oak softens rather than masks. Mature examples move toward leather, truffle and earth, finishing long and savoury.
