The red label is Bruno Giacosa's highest honor—reserved for wines of exceptional quality from only the greatest vintages. This is one of Piedmont's rarest and most celebrated bottlings. The Falletto estate, purchased by Giacosa in the early 1980s, encompasses thirteen hectares of south-facing vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, where calcareous clay soils in an amphitheater-shaped bowl produce Barolo of extraordinary structure and longevity. Unlike Giacosa's famous négociant Barbarescos, this is estate-grown fruit from his own vines. The 2000 vintage produced rich, opulent reds with round tannins, elegant character, and strong complexity. Macerated for up to thirty days and aged in large French oak botti for over three years before bottling, the wine is now over twenty-five years old and drinking magnificently—deep, powerful, and layered with tar, dried roses, and truffle character. Built for another two decades or more.

Antonio Galloni

"I have had mixed experiences with Bruno Giacosa’s 2000 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto, but this bottle, from a case I purchased on release, is absolutely stellar. Intensely sweet, floral aromas soar from the glass. Radiant, open-knit and super-expressive, the Riserva captures all the best qualities of the vintage. It has been a few years since I last tasted the 2000. In that time, the wine appears to have barely budged at all, which will come as welcome news to readers who own it. The 2000 Riserva doesn’t quite reach the heights of the truly epic Giacosa wines of the era, but it comes close, especially on this night. I can only hope that future bottles show this well." —Antonio Galloni

More about Bruno Giacosa

Bruno Giacosa passed away in 2018, but his legacy defines classical Barolo and Barbaresco. He was convinced that Nebbiolo doesn't need French barriques or modern tweaks—only time in large oak and genuine understanding of terroir. His golden palate earned him recognition as an 'icon of Piedmont' and a 'guardian of the traditional style,' and his wines are objects of desire for good reason. These are classical expressions of Nebbiolo made by someone who understood the grape's infinite complexity.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Rounder and more opulent than the 2001, so it flatters slightly softer dishes: roast duck with figs, agnolotti in a veal reduction, or beef braised with porcini. Truffle over a simple risotto is the ideal partner.

Tasting Profile

Deep, powerful and layered, with tar, dried roses, truffle and dark macerated fruit — the opulence of the 2000 vintage giving rounder, more welcoming tannins than Giacosa's sterner red-label years. Full-bodied and long, with the calcareous clay of Falletto showing as a savory mineral core beneath the richness. At twenty-five years old it is drinking magnificently right now; decant an hour or two, stand the bottle upright a day ahead for sediment, and there are still two decades in it.
