A mature bottle from one of the greatest modern Brunello vintages, made by one of Montalcino's most respected traditional estates. The Ripaccioli family farms on the cool north side of the hill, and their Brunello sees three years in large Slavonian oak casks, the classic recipe that lets Sangiovese's aromatics and structure shine through rather than being masked by new wood. The 2006 was a benchmark year, ripe and concentrated but with the firm acidity and tannin that let a wine like this evolve gracefully for two decades. Now nearing twenty years old, it's in a lovely mature window, showing the tobacco, leather, and dried-cherry complexity that only time in the cellar can give.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is distinctly savory and intense, with a feral bouquet that blends crushed fall leaves with nuances of menthol, tobacco and balsamic-laced black cherries. It's radiant and densely packed on the palate, enveloping the senses with depths of dark red berry fruit and mineral tones as a wild twang of sour citrus adds gravitas toward the close. This tapers off long and staining, still gently tannic, leaving a pleasantly bitter tinge that pinches at the cheeks. While approachable and enjoyable today, the 2006 still has a great deal more to offer." —Eric Guido

Wine Spectator

92 points

"Ripe and juicy, sporting cherry, raspberry, rose and spice aromas and flavors, all playing out on the elegant frame. This is a delicate style, favoring finesse over power. Still, there are tannins underneath that need time to integrate. Mineral finish."

Wine Enthusiast

91 points

"This is a nicely balanced wine with bright cherry and berry flavors that are offset by sweet spice, almond and toasted oak. The wood elements already show integration and will continue to diminish with time. Give this wine five or so more years of cellar aging."
