From one of the most revered vineyards in Barolo, Cappellano’s Otin Fiorin - Pie Franco 2017 offers a wine that combines depth, power, and finesse. The Pie Franco vineyard, known for its ancient vines, imparts a unique character to this Barolo, making it a stunning expression of Nebbiolo. The 2017 vintage is fresh, vibrant, and full of promise, capturing the essence of Barolo’s terroir with every sip.

The nose is complex, revealing a bouquet of dark fruits—black cherry, blackberry, and plum—intertwined with floral aromas of dried roses and violets. As the wine opens, earthy notes of tobacco, leather, and a touch of herbal spice emerge, adding further layers of depth. On the palate, the wine is structured and bold, with firm tannins that offer both power and elegance. The acidity is well-integrated, providing freshness and balance while supporting the wine’s rich fruit and earthy character. The finish is long, with lingering dark fruit and a minerally edge that reflects the soil of the Pie Franco vineyard.

This Barolo is a perfect match for roasted meats, truffle-based dishes, or a selection of aged cheeses. While it’s already showing beautifully, the wine has the structure to age for many years, continuing to develop more complexity and nuance with time. Cappellano’s Barolo Otin Fiorin - Pie Franco 2017 is a true reflection of Barolo at its finest, offering a remarkable combination of power, elegance, and age-worthiness.

Serralunga is extreme. No village in Barolo produces wines of greater structure and longevity. We understand that has to do with its soils, as no village in Barolo has a greater concentration of limestone.

When dealing with such a lion of a terroir, it must be tempting to find a whip that will tame the beast. For a wine-maker, that could be barriques, or short macerations, or roto-fermentors. Those are the short-cuts.

Augusto Cappellano, like his father Teobaldo before him, does not take those short cuts. Partly, that's because he is just fine with structure and longevity. That is the natural product of Serralunga's special terroir, after all. Partly, it's because Augusto's extremely high-quality farming (the family has only four hectares so they can apply their natural farming methods assiduously to each and every vine) ensures that the grapes' tannins ripen properly, avoiding any of the harsh, bitter qualities that for years many assumed were also "natural."
