Vigna d'Alceo is the flagship of Castello dei Rampolla, a Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot blend (roughly 85/15) from Panzano in Chianti, named for the founder Alceo di Napoli. What sets it apart from most Super Tuscans is the farming: Rampolla converted to biodynamics in 1994, and these terraced plots, first planted to Cabernet in 1990, have essentially never known conventional treatments. Since 2007 the wine sees only 10 to 12 months in barrel with very little new oak, a deliberate move to keep freshness and let the site speak. The 2010 vintage has the structure and depth to age for many years; open it well ahead or cellar it.

Antonio Galloni

97 points

"Deep ruby. Perfumed aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant, minerals, cedar and graphite are lifted by an intense note of violet. Smooth and fine-grained, with rich, multilayered flavors of vibrant cassis, blackberry, vanilla, aromatic herbs and candied violet. The finish is silky and extremely long, resonating with violet and flinty blackcurrant. D’Alceo is almost one of Italy’s top 20 wines of the vintage, but this 2010 looks as if it will turn into something truly special." —Ian D'Agata

Robert Parker

97 points

"The Castello dei Rampolla 2010 d'Alceo is a gorgeous wine that nails beautiful balance, concentration and freshness. The bouquet is generous and alive with vibrant tones of dark fruit, spice, forest floor and crushed mineral that recalls shale or granite. The wine is immensely vertical and fresh with fine tannins that add to its etched and focused appeal. The bouquet is intact, and the mouthfeel is equally impressive." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

"A mix of blackberry, black cherry, cedar, tobacco and spice flavors runs up against dense, muscular tannins in this tight, linear red. Juicy and vibrant, with plenty of fruit, this just needs time to harmonize. Terrific length."

More about Castello Dei Rampolla

Biodynamic since 1994—a pioneer when it seemed radical. This estate owns 13th-century cellars and makes Chianti Classico the old way: high planting density (competition between vines creates denser, structured grapes), minimal chemical intervention, Sangiovese with small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Austere, elegant, built to age. The Rampolla family has been here nearly three centuries; every vintage speaks to continuity and refusal to chase trends. Proof that tradition and modern farming philosophy can coexist.
