Top-flight Chablis from the largest fine estate in the appellation, now in its window. William Fèvre owns 3.8 hectares of Montmains—a Premier Cru on the Serein's left bank with deep clay soils that, in Didier Séguier's words, give the wine extra richness while letting Chablis's chalky tension take the lead. Séguier has been here since 1998 and farms organically and biodynamically. The cuvée draws from roughly equal parts of Montmains itself, Butteaux, and Forêts (the three sub-climats), giving it the layered character of a true climat blend rather than a single parcel. Seven years on, the 2018 has lost its early baby fat and arrived where premier cru Chablis wants to be: precise, mineral, with the lemon-curd richness of a warm-vintage Chablis tightening up over time.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2018 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru is more malic and steely on the nose compared to the Vaulorent or Fourchaume, the scents of sea spray, Granny Smith apples and limestone gaining good intensity with modest aeration. The palate is well balanced with a penetrating, spicy entry, very saline, almost peppery; hints of asparagus and kiwi fruit emerge toward the finish. I appreciate the austerity of this Montmains in what was a warm growing season. One of Fevre’s more divisive wines, but personally, I like this." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

92 points

"Offering up aromas of crisp green orchard fruit, dried white flowers, oyster shell and iodine, the 2018 Chablis 1er Cru Montmains is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a satiny attack, fine depth at the core, lively acids and a long, expansive finish. This is very promising." —William Kelley

Decanter

97 points

"A ripe and seductive Chablis, coating the mouth with saline notes alongside honeyed apple, delicately interspersed with floral fragrance and a lime and lemon core; energetic and concentrated on the finish. A cut above."

Wine Enthusiast

94 points

"Ripe lemon notes on this wine's nose have hints of Mirabelle plum and lemon-peel waxiness. The palate is rounded and smooth, but shot through with ripe lemon zest. This wine is fruitier and richer than expected, but buffered by a chalky texture that hints at untold depth. The finish reveals the full dimension of the wine." —Anne Krebiehl MW
