Jean-Claude Bessin is one of Chablis's quiet masters, a small grower in La Chapelle-Vaupelteigne who farms organically and works with indigenous yeasts and long élevage on fine lees. Valmur is one of the seven Grand Crus, a steep amphitheater tucked between Vaudésir and Grenouilles, and Bessin's bottling is partly barrel-fermented to give it flesh without obscuring the cool Kimmeridgian minerality that defines the appellation. He himself prizes the tension and cut of Chablis but only when it's paired with substance, and Valmur is where his style finds its fullest expression. 2019 was a generous, concentrated Chablis vintage, and six years on this Grand Cru is drinking beautifully now with another decade of upside ahead.

There is once again very good size, weight and volume to the intense, mineral-driven and overtly powerful flavors that already possess excellent complexity on the superbly long and well-balanced finale. This too is clearly built-to-age and a wine that's going to need at least some. In short, this is terrific and well worth searching out provided you have the discipline to cellar it for at least a few years."

Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's textural and chiseled, with huge depth at the core and a long, resonant finish.
