Premier cru Chablis grown in the rows next to Raveneau and Vincent Dauvissat, the two names that define the appellation, made by a house with a habit of overdelivering. Moreau-Naudet farms two parcels in Forêts, about 1.7 hectares in all: one of roughly 60-year-old vines beside Dauvissat, the other around 25 years old beside Raveneau. The Dauvissat neighbour fits, since Vincent Dauvissat was one of Stéphane Moreau's two great inspirations. The other was Didier Dagueneau, who also inspired the domaine's distinctive label. Forêts sits on mixed clays and decomposed rock over limestone, facing warm to the southeast, and that combination gives it power and intensity. The domaine builds on that with native-yeast fermentations, an unusually long élevage and an increasingly restrained use of oak. Since Stéphane died just before the 2016 harvest, his wife Virginie and longtime cellar master Coco have carried his approach forward, and their daughter Nell joined in 2020. We've long called this house Chablis quality at Petit Chablis pricing. Here that same thinking puts you next to the most famous neighbours in Chablis without paying their prices.

"Opening in the glass with aromas of crisp pear, Granny Smith apple and lemon oil, mingled with notes of freshly baked bread, the 2024 Chablis 1er Cru Forêts is medium- to full-bodied, ample and bright, with a crisp core of fruit that simultaneously exhibits considerable ripeness for the vintage, framed by racy acids and a saline finish." —Kristaps Karklins

More about Moreau-Naudet

Domaine Moreau-Naudet is a great source for excellent, nonconformist Chablis. Taking cues from legendary producers like Raveneau and Dauvissat, Moreau-Naudet makes ripe, shapely Chablis that define minerality with deeply concentrated substance. The flinty and austere wines that have become the norm for this region are less a reflection of the region’s true terroir and more a side-effect of high yield, early picking and machine harvesting. Moreau-Naudet does the opposite. By picking late and harvesting by hand, as well as tending their vineyards biodynamically, Moreau-Naudet is able to make complex wines that many Chablis producers with wines similarly priced have not.

Winemaker Stephane Moreau suffered an untimely and tragic death in August 2016. When he passed unexpectedly it sent a shock through Burgundy and the wine world beyond. However, his family and assistant winemaker rallied and worked hard to maintain Stephane's racy and detailed style for the 2016 vintage. Since then Stephane’s wife, Virginie Moreau-Naudet, has carried on her late husband’s philosophy and style with resounding success. Tasting these wines today we feel inspired and grateful for her and her family’s perseverance.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Sole meunière; seared scallops with brown butter; roast chicken with morels and cream; gougères or a wedge of aged Comté; lobster with drawn butter.

Tasting Profile

Dry Chardonnay with ripe citrus and orchard fruit over a stony, limestone edge. Medium- to full-bodied for Chablis, with real concentration held in place by firm, bright acidity. The finish is long, with a mineral, faintly salty cut.
