Chartogne-Taillet, Champagne Hors Serie, 2022

Hors Serie translates to 'out of series,' and that's exactly what it is: the one wine where Alexandre Chartogne leaves his home village of Merfy to work Grand Cru Chardonnay from the Cote des Blancs, from two plots in the Grand Cru villages of Avize and Oger. It tastes starkly different from the rest of his lineup, and that's the point. Grown on deep chalk and vinified with the same conviction Chartogne brings to everything, it ferments and ages a long time in oak barrel on its lees, with native yeasts, no fining, and no filtration, finishing Extra Brut. The result is a richer, creamier, more concentrated Blanc de Blancs, its enveloping texture strung tight against pure chalky minerality. A serious, gastronomic Champagne made in tiny quantities.

Antonio Galloni

"I tasted the 2022 Extra-Brut Hors Série in three versions during dosage trials. Ample and creamy, the 2022 is a Champagne of striking textural breadth and resonance. Layers of citrus confit and floral notes develop with time. It will be interesting to see where this ends up, as the wine itself is absolutely gorgeous. I preferred the version with the lowest dosage, as it seemed to offer the best balance in a vintage that already offers so much natural richness of its own." —Antonio Galloni

More about Chartogne-Taillet

After a stage with Antoine Selosse, Alexandre Chartogne returned to the family estate and turned it upside down. He spent years experimenting and tinkering with every aspect of Champagne making from vine management to vessels. He's landed back where he says his ancestors started: in the vineyards, growing perfect fruit and aging in neutral oak.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
